Firing up the barbecue for summer
Nothing says summer like firing up the barbecue for some great eating! Having a grill on your deck is a great way to enjoy both, either for a dinner party or just with the family. Here are a few tips to keep your finished deck and your grill cooperating all summer long.
1. Use a grill mat & cover. A grill mat will protect the surface of your finished deck from spatters and drips from the grill. It’s also important to cover the grill when you’re not using it. When rain falls on an uncovered grill, the water picks up the grease and runs down to the deck, staining the wood.
2. Place your grill carefully.
Don’t place your grill too close to the railing of your deck. There should be a minimum of 18” between the back of your grill and the deck railing. If you put your hand on the railing behind your deck and the wood is too hot to touch, it’s too hot for your wood.
3. Choose the best type of grill.
A propane grill is the best for enjoying barbecue on your finished deck this summer. However, charcoal is fine when you use the proper precautions, such as using a grill mat and ensuring that the bottom of your grill bowl is at least 18” off the deck. Avoid putting any paper or lighter wood on the hot coals, as ash and embers could fly onto your deck and singe its finish. The beautiful weather is here, and with it outdoor parties with friends and family. Keep your deck and your grill going strong with these useful tips.
